Faith is one of the most important themes in the Bible. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Faith connects us to God's promises, His power, and His presence. But where does faith come from? The Bible clearly teaches that faith comes through hearing the Word of God. The Holy Spirit works together with God's Word to bring life, conviction, guidance, and spiritual growth.
Faith Comes by Hearing God's Word
The Apostle Paul wrote:
"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." — Romans 10:17 (NKJV)
Faith is not produced by human effort, positive thinking, or emotions. Genuine biblical faith is born when we hear, read, meditate on, and believe God's Word. The Word reveals God's character, His promises, and His will for our lives.
When Abraham received God's promise that he would become the father of many nations, there was no physical evidence to support it. Yet he believed God's Word.
"He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God." — Romans 4:20 (NKJV)
Abraham's faith was strengthened because he trusted what God had spoken.
Why We Need the Word of God
1. The Word Gives Spiritual Life
Jesus said:
"The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life." — John 6:63 (NKJV)
God's Word is not merely information. It carries spiritual life. Just as physical food sustains the body, God's Word nourishes our spirit.
Jesus also declared:
"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." — Matthew 4:4 (NKJV)
A believer who neglects God's Word becomes spiritually weak. But one who regularly feeds on Scripture grows strong in faith.
2. The Word Guides Our Path
Life is full of decisions and challenges. God's Word provides direction.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." — Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)
Like a lamp shining in darkness, Scripture helps us distinguish right from wrong and keeps us from wandering away from God's will.
3. The Word Cleanses and Sanctifies Us
Jesus prayed for His disciples:
"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth." — John 17:17 (NKJV)
The Word exposes sin, corrects errors, and transforms our character. As we obey Scripture, we become more like Christ.
4. The Word Equips Us for Every Good Work
Paul wrote:
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." — 2 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV)
God's Word teaches us what is right, reveals what is wrong, and shows us how to live a godly life.
The Spirit of God Agrees with the Word of God
The Holy Spirit never works independently of God's Word. The Spirit inspired the Scriptures and confirms their truth in our hearts.
The Holy Spirit Inspired the Word
"Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." — 2 Peter 1:21 (NKJV)
The Bible is God's inspired Word because the Holy Spirit guided its writers.
The Spirit Bears Witness to the Truth
Jesus said:
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth." — John 16:13 (NKJV)
The Holy Spirit leads believers into the truth already revealed in God's Word. He never contradicts Scripture.
Some people seek spiritual experiences while neglecting the Bible. However, true spiritual experiences will always agree with God's written Word. If a teaching, vision, prophecy, or experience contradicts Scripture, it is not from God.
Word and Spirit Work Together
A powerful example is found in Ezekiel's vision of the dry bones.
God first commanded Ezekiel to prophesy the Word. Then the breath (a picture of the Spirit) entered the bones and brought them to life (Ezekiel 37:1-10).
The Word provided the message, and the Spirit supplied the power. Throughout Scripture, God's Word and God's Spirit work together.
An Illustration: Peter Walking on Water
In Matthew 14, Peter saw Jesus walking on the sea. Peter said:
"Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." — Matthew 14:28 (NKJV)
Jesus spoke one word:
"Come." — Matthew 14:29 (NKJV)
Peter stepped out in faith because he had received a word from Jesus. As long as he focused on Christ's word, he walked above the waves. When he looked at the storm, fear replaced faith.
This teaches us an important lesson: faith grows when we focus on God's Word, but fear grows when we focus only on circumstances.
Faith Pleases God
The Bible says:
"But without faith it is impossible to please Him." — Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)
Faith is not blind optimism. Faith is confidence in what God has spoken. Every great man and woman of God in Scripture trusted God's Word despite difficulties.
Noah built the ark because he believed God's Word.
Abraham left his homeland because he believed God's promise.
Moses confronted Pharaoh because he trusted God.
David faced Goliath because he believed God's covenant.
The apostles preached the gospel because they trusted Christ's promises.
The Living and Powerful Word
The writer of Hebrews declares:
"For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword." — Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
God's Word is alive today. It still changes hearts, heals broken lives, strengthens faith, and brings people to salvation through Jesus Christ.
Faith and the Word of God cannot be separated. Faith comes from hearing God's Word, grows through God's Word, and stands upon God's Word. The Holy Spirit, who inspired the Scriptures, works in harmony with the Word to reveal Christ, transform lives, and empower believers.
When we read, meditate on, and obey God's Word, our faith increases. The Spirit of God illuminates the truth, making it alive in our hearts. Therefore, every believer should develop a daily habit of reading and studying Scripture.
"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord." — Jeremiah 17:7 (NKJV)
